Backstory on the song, in Jason's own words: "Richland Township is a small rural section of land in the middle of Kansas, where I grew up and lived until leaving for college. Each spring the farmers of the area burn away the detritus and dead prairie grass of the previous season by prescribed prairie fires; a preventative measure against invasive species, especially cedar growth. Richland Township Blues is a prairie fire, out of control, taking ones home. Metaphorically, it symbolized my leaving home."
